Neighbourhood officers in Sheffield city centre were able to revive two women who were in a critical condition after taking Spice by giving them life-saving doses of Naloxone. Sheffield City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team officers Sergeant Simon Pickering and PC Madison Walker were on patrol when they were alerted to a woman who was blue and lifeless on the steps of Sheffield Cathedral. Concerned that she had taken a drugs overdose, the pair called for an ambulance before immediately commencing CPR and administering two doses of Naloxone. Naloxone is a small but effective nasal spray that works quickly to counteract the effects of potentially lethal opioid overdoses. It buys crucial time ahead of further medical intervention and causes no further harm to an individual, regardless of what drug they have taken or whether they have taken a drug or not. Sgt Pickering and PC Walker continued giving CPR until ambulance crews arrived to give further medication. Her breathing soon began to improve and she was taken to hospital for further assessment and treatment. Hours later, her condition was no longer deemed as life-threatening. Less than 30 minutes after that incident, other neighbourhood policing officers received a report of another woman who was in respiratory arrest in High Street. She had collapsed after reportedly also taking Spice. The officers attended and two doses of Naloxone were administered before paramedics arrived to assist. The woman reacted well to the Naloxone and was taken to hospital where her condition improved to the point it was no longer considered life-threatening. Detective Chief Inspector Mark Oughton, who is our force lead for drugs, said: "Once again, Naloxone has proved to be an effective life-saving tool, saving two women from potentially fatal cardiac arrests. "In these situations, every second matters, and administering Naloxone buys crucially valuable time for further medical intervention. "It's no understatement to say it could be the difference between life and death and it's great our officers are able to carry it and help prevent needless drug deaths in South Yorkshire."
