We are appealing for information and witnesses following a stabbing in Barnsley.
At 8.50pm yesterday evening (7 May) we were called by the ambulance service to Pontefract Road, Lundwood, where it was reported a man had been stabbed during a suspected robbery at the Todays Express shop.
Officers and emergency services colleagues were quickly on scene and the man, aged 40, was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition. He remains in hospital and his condition is reported to have recently stabilised.
Extensive enquiries, including CCTV trawls, house to house work and searches undertaken by specialist forensic teams, are ongoing and we're now appealing for help from the public as our investigation progresses.
Acting Detective Chief Inspector Helen Hughes said:
"We understand news of this incident will cause significant concern locally and I want to reassure you that we're working at pace to progress lines of enquiry and identify a suspect.
"You'll notice an increased police presence in the area today and officers will be out on dedicated patrols over the weekend to provide reassurance and answer any questions you might have.
"I'd urge anyone who thinks they have information which could help us to get in touch as soon as possible.
"The details you have might seem insignificant, but it could prove to be a vital piece of the jigsaw as our investigation progresses."
You can report online or by calling 101 and quoting incident number 1000 of 7 May 2026.
If you'd rather not deal directly with police, you can pass on information completely anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or visiting their website.
