Romance Fraud 2024

Request

I am writing to make a formal request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

I am seeking data on the number of reported cases of romance fraud in the year 2024 for Sheffield.

Please provide the number of romance fraud reports for this city in 2024.

Response

In order to facilitate this FOI request, I’ve provided data based on the below filter - A keyword search of the Investigation Summary field for all NFIB fraud offences that mention either “ROMANCE” or “DATING”, or where the recorded NFIB fraud offence is equal to “NFIB1D Dating Scam”.

Criteria used -

Fraud Filter and Incident Date Created is greater than or equal to 01/012024 and BCU Desc is equal to / is in Sheffield and Investigation Summary is LIKE (pattern match) %romance% or Investigation Summary is equal to / is in dating or Full Offence Title is equal to / is in NFIB1D Dating Scam 

Please note -

• As there is no specific offence of “romance fraud”, a search of all recorded NFIB fraud offences has been conducted using the filters as detailed above
• Data extracted from CONNECT on the 30th July 2024. CONNECT is a live recording system and is therefore subject to change
• Date parameter used – Incident created date between 01-JAN-2024 and 29-JUL-2024

The above filters produced 6 results.
