Request details
Pursuant to S1 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (“the Act”), I am writing to make a request for the below outlined information. I am looking to find out about your use of Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology in 2025.
Please note, my terminology is from this explainer document and my requests are based on publicly reported metrics.
1. The number of LFR deployments and total deployment hours each month.
2. The number of alerts, true alerts and confirmed true alerts each month.
3. The number of false alerts, confirmed false alerts and false alert rate each month.
4. If recorded, the estimated number of faces seen each month.
5. The number of engagements and arrest outcomes as a result of LFR each month.
6. Confirmation of if any LFR false alerts led to arrest outcomes.
If any metric is not recorded, please continue to provide the rest. In accordance with S11(1) of the Act, I would like this information presented to me via a Microsoft Word, PDF or Excel document, sent to me via email please.
I would be grateful if you could confirm that you have received this request and I look forward to hearing from you. If my request is denied in whole or part, I ask that you justify all deletions by reference to specific exemptions of the act. I also expect you to release all non-exempt material.
Response
I sourced your request to our Digital Data and Technology Team who have supplied the following information.
Question 1 - 6
No Information Held – South Yorkshire Police does not utilise Live Facial Recognition Technology.
Police forces do not use generic systems or identical procedures for capturing the data. For these reasons this response to your questions should not be used for comparison purposes with responses you may receive from other police forces.
