Your request details
The number of hate crimes recorded in South Yorkshire over the past 5 calendar years, broken down into the number each year (including in 2025 to date).
Please detail how many hate crimes each year were classified as motivated by race, religion, sexual orientation, disability and transgender respectively.
Response
I approached our Performance Review Unit for assistance with your request. An analyst within this unit has conducted a search of our Crime Management System - Connect which records complaints or allegations of those matters, which the Home Office specify should be recorded as 'crimes'. All our systems are designed and used first and foremost for Policing Purposes and have limited search capability. They provided the following information and an explanation regarding their search criteria:

Note that provided within the Hate Crime there are the total count of crime as well as individual hate counts. This is because there can be more than one hate count per crime for example, race and religion often appear together.
The suspect demographic data provided has been extracted from the crime recording system and filtered using what we believe is the most effective method in order to provide the most accurate data possible and minimise data quality issues.
Despite our best efforts, as with any large-scale recording system, the data is subject to potential errors from data entry and processing. It should also be noted that it is a live recording system and subject to change.
We are committed to improving the quality of our data and internal testing has shown that data quality issues are likely to be minimal, as such we are able to provide the data along with this caveat.

Please note, every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and complete. However, it is important to note that data has been extracted from data sources used by this force for police purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large-scale recording systems and information assets.
The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of relevance of data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of figures/data for any requests may have limitations, and this should be taken into account when those data sets are used.
Police forces do not use generic systems or identical procedures for capturing the data. For these reasons this response to your questions should not be used for comparison purposes with responses you may receive from other police forces.
