Contingency planning

South Yorkshire Police deal with a whole range of issues and scenarios every day – some need immediate attention, others can be planned ahead.

Looking forward

The Contingency Planning Unit looks ‘long term’ putting plans in place for incidents involving airports, hazardous sites and radiation among others.

The unit provides training for probationer constables and other officers about all aspects of hazardous materials with similar training provided for partner agencies including local councils, health authorities and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

Members of the unit work closely with Emergency Planning Officers from both local and national agencies and also provide advice on managing risks and what to do in the event of an emergency.

Up and coming

Operational planning is about ‘short term’ events that occur more regularly across the Force like major sporting occasions (football matches, marathons etc) and town and city centre issues.

Other events covered by the team include VIP visits to the area e.g. members of the Royal family, government ministers etc, and incidents of disorder at local prisons.
