A 40-yr-old man from the Leicester area suffered a broken back and shoulder blade after his car left the M1 on Sunday,  18 January 2009.

He was driving a red Ford Focus northbound towards Barnsley when it left the carriageway and dropped 40 feet onto Grange Lane. He received two fractures to the vertebrae and was taken to the Northern General Hospital and detained.

It happened at 5.10am, about half a mile north of Junction 34 ( Meadowhall).
