Eleven- year-old boy improving in alleged Edlington assault
Two boys, aged ten and 11, are to be questioned further today in connection with an alleged assault which left one boy with life-threatening injuries and another boy with serious injuries in the Edlington area on Saturday afternoon( 4 April). This morning ( Monday 6 April) detectives have been granted a magistrates' extension of detention to allow more time to interview them. Meanwhile the 11-yr-old boy admitted to the Children's Hospital in Sheffield with life-threatening head injuries is continuing to show signs of improvement. He has been taken off a ventilator in the intensive care unit and placed on a high dependency ward. This morning he was described as 'stable'. However, detectives are not expecting to be able to speak to him today. The nine-year-old boy, who suffered facial injuries and an injury to his arm, is expected to undergo further surgery ( to his arm) today or tomorrow.
Police were called to the Brick Ponds area at about 1420 after the nine year-old boy was spotted by a member of the public in Auburn Street. He was taken to the Doncaster Royal Infirmary where he had an operation on his arm.
Further enquiries led the police to the bottom of a slope where the 11-yr-old boy was found partially conscious. He was airlifted to the Sheffield Children's Hospital and placed in intensive care. The two boys arrested were found in nearby allotments shortly afterwards.
This morning police continue to conduct house to house enquiries and forensic teams have taken away a number of items from Brick Ponds for examination.
