Parking Action Week at Birley Community Primary School
Road savvy youngsters teamed up with the Woodhouse and Mosborough Safer Neighbourhood Team to ensure roads around their school are safe.
Children from Birley Community Primary School hosted a Parking Action Week from 22 to 26 March 2010.
The aim of the action week was to ensure drivers on the school run are aware of their responsibilities when parking near to a busy school.
PCSO Roger Shalome, of the Woodhouse and Mosborough Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “It is the driver’s responsibility to make sure they think about the danger and hazards they may create if they want to park near a school. They need to ask themselves if they would want their own children to negotiate badly parked vehicles near to their school.”
At the beginning and end of the school day, children from years six and seven wearing fluorescent jackets gave considerate drivers a leaflet thanking them for parking thoughtfully and a warning ticket to those who had parked without care.
The council’s parking services department were involved at the end of the action week and issued two parking tickets to motorist who ignored the youngsters’ warnings.
School manager Hilary Dennis-Madin said: “This initiative was a great success. The children enjoyed the learning experience immensely and hopefully vehicle movement around the vicinity of the school will improve, ensuring a safer environment for the children.
“The school wishes to thank Roger Shalome (PCSO) and the other members of his team for their support and guidance throughout.”
