Working with their partners at Sheffield Wednesday FC and Supertram, South Yorkshire Police are mounting a large operation on the bank holiday weekend for the final match of the season to be played at Hillsborough - Sheffield Wednesday versus Crystal Palace. This match could see either team face relegation and a turnout of some 35,000 fans are expected to attend. 

On Sunday, 2 May 2010, the tram service is almost certain to be suspended to allow urgent works on the tramline near to the Hillsborough bus terminus.

Trams will run to Shalesmoor tramstop where a replacement bus service will be arranged for football fans and for regular service users.  The football service will be escorted using police motorcyclists through to Hillsborough Stadium. The same operation will be undertaken on the return journey after the match, taking football fans directly into the City.

With a kick off at 1pm, the police are advising fans who normally travel by tram to the match to arrive at Shalesmoor tram Stop no later than 11.30am on Sunday 2 May.  At the end of the match, the police are again requesting fans to make their way to the waiting coaches quickly once they leave the stadium.

Chief Inspector Simon Verrall, overseeing policing arrangements for the match, said: “This is likely to be a capacity crowd and travel is difficult at the best of times. The kick-off is timed across all league games, so I would ask that all fans leave plenty of time for their journey to enjoy the game”.
