Safer socialising in Dearne
The inspector of Dearne Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) has spoken of his determination to ensure public houses in the Dearne area remain safe, enjoyable places to visit.
This comes after the Thurnscoe Hotel, Houghton Road was closed on 23rd February 2010 after violence and antisocial behaviour persisted in the premises.
Inspector Alan Simpson said: “We understand that pubs are important places in the community, however, it is essential that licensees keep control on how these premises are run and take action where necessary to eradicate violence, drug taking and antisocial behaviour.
“Dearne SNT had been working with the Thurnscoe Hotel for some time prior to its closure yet the problems still persisted which meant further action was inevitable.
“Applying for public house closures is not an action police take lightly but it is one which is sometimes essential to ensure the area remains safe for residents.”
Dearne SNT regularly visits pubs as part of their patrol duties to provide police visibility and reassurance. They also work closely with the Pubwatch scheme where local licensees meet monthly to discuss issues of concerns with each other and with police.
