Bin arsonists put lives at risk in Cudworth
Cudworth Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) has been working in conjunction with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue (SYFR) to tackle several wheelie bin and skip fires which have been occurring in and around the Barnsley Road area over the last week.
Wheelie bins are being stolen from properties in the area before being set on fire in public locations by individuals for entertainment purposes.
Cudworth SNT has been visiting addresses along with SYFR to explain how they can reduce their chances of becoming victim to such acts of antisocial behaviour. They have been carrying out high visibility patrols in the area to offer reassurance to the public and help deter any future offenders.
Simon Brookes SYFR officer said:“Wheelie bin fires may start small, but they can escalate quickly and soon become life threatening, which can also divert resources away from more serious incidents. Residents can help reduce the arson risk by storing wheelie bins securely, helping neighbours and reporting any suspicious behaviour to the police.”
Sergeant Stephanie Smith said:“We are taking these incidents of anti social behaviour very seriously and those who carry out such acts will find themselves being arrested for theft and criminal damage. We urge anyone with information on theses incidents to contact us immediately.”
If you would like to contact Cudworth SNT, please leave a message on 01226 736592 and someone will get back to you.
Wheelie bin safety tips

- Take your bin from the kerbside as soon as possible after collection
- Make friend with your neighbours and help them out- bring them in for them if needed
- Don’t overfill your bin and make sure the lid will close
- Store wheelie bins safely and securely, wherever possible, limiting the opportunity for arson
