Dodworth children help curb speeding

School children and police will join forces tomorrow to ensure motorists watch their speed.

A team of 10 Junior Wardens from St John’s Church of England Primary School, Dodworth, Barnsley, will be working with the Dodworth Safer Neighbourhood Team on Tuesday 27 April 2010 to curb speeding on Barnsley Road.

The 10 and 11-year-olds will use a ‘Smiley SID’ (speed indication device) to monitor compliance of the 30-mile-per-hour speed limit on the busy road outside their school.

PCSO Emma Glover, of the SNT, said: “There isn’t a particular speeding problem on Barnsley Road, but it’s certainly a very busy road. For motorists to be told about their speeding by children hits home much harder than if police tell them.  People often feel much more ashamed when a child tells them their speed could kill.

“The pupils love the community spirit of the Junior Wardens programme.”

The operation has been funded by the Dodworth Crime and Safety Group and will take place for 90 minutes from 1pm.

Anyone caught speeding will be stopped by police and spoken to by officers and Junior wardens.
