Police appeal after elderly man hurt in Barnsley crash

South Yorkshire Police are appealing for information after a 90-year-old man was seriously injured in a traffic collision on Huddersfield Road, in Barnsley, on Saturday 14, August.

At 1.50pm, a black Vauxhall Astra was travelling along the A635 Huddersfield Road towards Barnsley Town centre. The 20-year-old man driving the Astra went through the traffic lights on the crossroad junction with Rowland Road and Wilthorpe Farm Road and towards the pelican crossing on the Barnsley side of the junction.

As the Astra travelled over the pelican crossing, the man stepped from the central island into the carriageway in front of the vehicle. The driver attempted to swerve but the car collided with the offside wing mirror of the car.

The 90-year-old man sustained two broken legs and broken foot and is being treated at Barnsley District Hospital. 

The 20-year-old man from Pontefract, driving the Astra was not thought to have been hurt.
