Police target speeding motorists in Cudworth

Cudworth Safer Neighbourhood Team has been targeting speeding motorists in the area after it was made a PACT priority by local agencies and residents four months ago.

Roads blighted by speeders include:

  • Brierley Road, Shafton
  • Thurnscoe lane, Great Houghton.
  • Dog Hill, Shafton.
  • Pontefract road, Cudworth.
  • Common road, Brierley
  • Weetshaw lane, Shafton

For four months, police have been regularly visiting the roads, looking out for motorists who risk their lives and the lives of others by ignoring the law and exceeding the speed limit.

Since April, 160 vehicles thought to be speeding have been checked with the SNT’s hand-held speed detection device. Forty-five speed advice letters have been issued and six motorists agreed to attend a speed awareness course which they were required to pay for. Six £60 speeding fines were issued, eight drivers were reported on summons for speeding and one driver was arrested for being over the drink-drive limit.

Sergeant Steph Smith said: “Since the issue was highlighted as a PACT priority, we’ve had a lot of success in identifying offenders and advising them on appropriate and lawful driving. We will continue to target speeding motorists to ensure our roads remain safe.”
