Officers in Doncaster sniff out cannabis plants

Officers from the Urban Safer Neighbourhood Team have found over 40 cannabis plants in Hexthorpe after smelling the drug whilst out on patrol.

During regular patrols of the allotments on Bramworth Road, Hexthorpe, officers from the SNT became concerned that there was a strong smell of cannabis in the area.

Cannabis plant found by officers As a result they carried out extra patrols in the area at varying times to try and find where the smell was coming from.  They spoke to residents and allotment holders to gather information. During one of their patrols, they found 42 cannabis plants that had been disposed of on the riverbank near the allotment entrance.

PC Carl Spooner from the Urban SNT said: “This was a substantial find as the plants had the potential value of making thousands of pounds. It was obvious that the increased police activity around the area had displaced the cultivation set up.”

Officers from the SNT will continue to carry out extra patrols in the area and further investigations will be conducted with the allotment holders to try to catch the people responsible.

PC Carl Spooner added: “Although on this occasion we have not caught the people responsible we have managed to prevent a substantial amount of drugs circulating in the area and denied criminals financial benefit. We want to reassure the public that we will continue with these patrols and investigations will be conducted at the allotment.”
