Safer neighbourhood team works with residents in Doncaster to stop ‘Cold Calling’

Conisbrough Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) have been working with residents in Conisbrough to implement a ‘No Cold Calling Zone’ in their area.

Residents from the Ryecroft area told their local SNT they were fed up of people calling at their homes trying to sell them things they did not want. To try to discourage this Community Safety Wardens, Heather Macpherson and Tom Fent from the SNT worked with the residents to set up a ‘No Cold Calling Zone’ in the area.

A consultation meeting with the residents was held to determine how many of them would welcome the zone being set up. With over 60 local people wanting the zone the SNT were able to set it up.

The ‘No Cold Calling Zone’ was launched in June, with signs on the street as well as each resident having a sign for their door. Residents have also received an information leaflet explaining how the zone works.

The SNT also referred some residents onto partner agencies for help and advice. The fire service provided fire safety tips and safety checks as well as fitting smoke detectors to the properties that needed them. Residents were also given the opportunity to secure their property using smartwater, which is an invisible liquid that can only be seen under ultraviolet light. It can be painted onto valuables in the home and contains information that can be traced back to the owner if stolen.

Sgt Daren Cawley with residents outside the 'No Cold Calling Zone'Sergeant Daren Cawley said: “The ‘No Cold Calling Zone’ will help residents feel safer and secure in their homes and attempt to reduce doorstep crime. We have also been able to offer crime prevention advice and safety tips through other partners. The SNT are committed to making the residents feel safe and secure in their homes and we will continue to work with them to achieve this.”
