Police hold a ‘Meet the police’ day at local school

Pupils from Dearne Highgate Primary School, Nicholas Lane, enjoyed a less than typical school day last week, thanks to a ‘Meet the police’ day, organised by Dearne Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT).

Monday 21 June began with an assembly from police officers on road safety: how to cross the road properly, the dangers of speeding motorists and the importance of always wearing a seatbelt.

Members of South Yorkshire Police Dog Unit were next to give a presentation with the help of their four-legged friends, and explain how dogs are used to assist police duties, including sniffing out drugs and chasing offenders.

Lunch-time saw the landing of the police helicopter where officers explained its role in locating offenders quickly and effectively.

The educational event carried on throughout the afternoon with more talks from Mounted Section, Dearne SNT and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue who advised on fire safety as well as explaining their role and the importance of their uniform and fire engine.

Dearne SNT PCSO Samantha Cox said:“We organised the day as part of our on-going community engagement strategy which aims to assist in our integration into the community, meeting people and showing a physical presence in society.

“We interacted with over 350 children, along with more than 50 parents. We have received lots of positive feedback from the school along with a thank you letter. Parents have also left encouraging comments via our contact line.

“It is important that young people know from an early age, who we are, what we do and how we can help them and those around them.
