Thurnscoe murder - local man charged
A 36-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Philip Alan Smith.
Gary McKeown, from Thurnscoe, will appear before Barnsley Magistrates’ Court tomorrow morning (Saturday, 4 February).
Thirty-six-year-old Philip Smith, also from Thurnscoe, was found injured in Church Street, Thurnscoe, around 4.30pm on Saturday 28 January, after a disturbance near the junction with Houghton Road. He was taken to Barnsley District General Hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Justice for Sheffield dad as killer jailed
A MAN who killed a Sheffield dad and former workmate has today been jailed for 26 years at Sheffield Crown Court.
Hassan Maruf, aged 20, from Hampton Road, Fir Vale, was found guilty after a week-long trial of the murder of Zabihullah Rafiq in the early hours of 29 May, 2011.
Thirty-year-old Zabi was making his way home from work when he was stabbed - just yards away from his flat at Callow Mount, Gleadless - and left for dead. A post mortem found that Zabi had died from a stab wound to the chest.
Doncaster couple sentenced for money laundering and counterfeiting offences
A couple from the Bessacarr area of Doncaster have been sentenced for money laundering and counterfeit goods offences. Philip Cummings and Sarah Hutchinson appeared at Doncaster Crown Court on Friday, 13 January. Cummings was sentenced to 15 months in prison while Hutchinson received a 9-month sentence, suspended for two years.
Consider others when travelling through roadworks
The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is urging drivers to be considerate to other road users and road workers when travelling through roadworks.
With ever increasing volumes of traffic associated with modern living the maintenance of our roads becomes more frequent and necessary. The various agencies involved in the repair of our roads do so under increasingly difficult circumstances and, although not always obvious, make every effort to minimise disruption that may be caused.
Allow extra journey time as winter weather hits parts of the country
With freezing weather forecast across parts of the county this week, the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is recommending that drivers pay increased attention to winter driving conditions.
The partnership is urging drivers to allow extra time for journeys, preparing themselves by carrying emergency kit such as waterproof jackets, gloves, boots and a shovel, regardless of how long or short their journey may be.
Officers crack down on dangerous parking in Intake
Residents living in the Intake area complained to their local Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT), that some parents were parking in dangerous positions close to local schools when they were picking their children up.
Thurnscoe man named as murder investigation continues
Police have named the man who died yesterday after sustaining serious injuries in Thurnscoe as 36-year-old Philip Alan Smith.
Philip, of Stotfold Drive, Thurnscoe, was found injured in Church Street around 4.30pm on Saturday, 28 January, after a disturbance near the junction with Houghton Road.
He was taken to Barnsley District General Hospital where he later died from his injuries. Specialist officers are now liasing closely with Philip’s family.

Police in Doncaster are trying to trace a man after an alleged distraction burglary at Emley House on St James Street.
The incident happened on Wednesday, 11 January around 4pm after the occupant, an elderly woman, was followed into the communal area of the flats by a man.
Lifewise drop-in for online services
The Lifewise centre is offering free advice on using the internet for online services.
The centre, in Rotherham, will be open for a free drop in session on Friday 3 February between 3.30pm and 6.00pm.
The initiative ‘New Year, new online you’ aims to inspire South Yorkshire to make 2012 the year they get online and discover all the benefits the internet has to offer.

Officers from the Special Constabulary crack down on antisocial behaviour in Doncaster.
Officers from the Special Constabulary in Doncaster have led a number of operations over the last month, to crack down on criminal damage and antisocial behaviour on public transport.
The special officers worked with officers from British Transport Police (BTP) to conduct high visibility patrols of the Doncaster Interchange and the train station to deter antisocial behaviour and crime.
