Strategic Policing Priority 4 - Reduce serious and organised crime and protect South Yorkshire from terrorism and extremism

Why is this a priority for SYP?
|
SERIOUS AND ORGANISED CRIME
These are crimes committed with others, for substantial profit, whether based in the UK or elsewhere. It presents itself in many forms to make money from drugs and stolen property to organised and sustained abuse of the vulnerable. You will never hear about our work to disrupt or dismantle these crime groups until we make arrests. We take our responsibilities seriously and will continue to deploy resources to tackle these issues so that you are kept safe.
Why is this important?
Organised criminals present a threat to local communities either as a result of the impact on the local economy, the risk they present to vulnerable people or the antisocial behaviour that is caused as a result of their actions.
How will we achieve this?
We will continue to gather intelligence about organised crime and map it to identify the network or the criminals and the threat they pose. We will disrupt their ability to make money by seizing assets, where appropriate, and prosecuting those involved. We will also continue to work closely with other law enforcement agencies at a regional and national level to coordinate our response to achieve the maximum impact; an approach that will contribute to the national strategy for tackling organised crime groups.
GUN CRIME
Is any crime involving a firearm (both real and imitation) whether it was fired, used as a blunt instrument against a person, or used as a threat.
Why is this important?
Whilst we know that South Yorkshire is a safe place to live and work, we also know the painful impact these crimes have on victims’ families. That’s why we continue to strive to reduce gun crime in our area. This is one element of a wider approach to combat serious and organised crime.
How will we achieve this?
We will target individuals and organised crime groups who use or have access to firearms. We will continue to work with partners to educate and rehabilitate those young people at greater risk and makeyoung people aware of the dangers of carrying guns and knives or even fake weapons. Our explicit presentations in schools often include a DVD, role playing and scenarios.
