Strategic Policing Priority 3 - Tackle Crime At All Levels
|
|
Why is this a priority for SYP?Tackling crime is daily business for us. We realise that being a victim of crime can be very distressing. Crime in South Yorkshire has fallen significantly in recent years. We will continue to reduce crime through partnership working and building strong links with our communities. If you are a victim of crime, we will support you through the process and will make full use of forensic science and technology available to try to solve your crime. |
REDUCE CRIME
Why is this important?
The Home Secretary has stated that the purpose of all police forces is to reduce crime.
We have continued to drive down crime in South Yorkshire to its lowest in 20 years but we acknowledge that there’s more we can do to prevent people becoming a victim of crime.
Our ‘Your Voice Counts’ survey results show that 31% of people think it’s unlikely they will be a victim of crime. We want you to continue to feel safe and feel confident that we are dealing with the issues that matter to you.
We are committed to doing all we can to continue to reduce crime albeit with reduced resources. We’ve taken the decision to concentrate our efforts on those crimes that constitute the majority of our crime rate and those which you have told us are of particular concern. These are:
Serious Acquisitive Crime
Comprising of burglary, theft of and from vehicles, and robbery offences.
Why is this important?
Although the majority of people do not experience crimes such as burglary, vehicle crime or robbery, we know that if you are a victim of such a crime, it has a big impact on you so we will continue to work hard to catch the people who commit these crimes.
How will we achieve this?
We know who the prolific offenders are - those who time and time again commit the same offences. With the help of our partners, we will try to divert these people away from criminal behaviour. We will continue to utilise crime reduction tactics to minimise the chances of you becoming a victim of these crimes. We will improve our links with courts and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) highlighting the extent of problems and raising awareness of our initiatives.
It can be particularly devastating when someone breaks into your home, which is why we are proud that our consistent, focussed efforts during the last three years has seen a 34% reduction in burglary offences. This is an excellent achievement, which we are keen to build on to ensure that we continue our emphasis on burglary of the home. We've also seen a 17% reduction in distraction burglaries and an increase to 29% in detections compared to last year.
