Operation Liberal

Operation Liberal is the national operation set up to tackle distraction burglary. The operation has contacts in each force in England and Wales and a close working relationship with those in Scotland and Ireland.

Distraction burglary prevention is about raising vulnerable people's awareness of security issues, but also working with the organisations that call on vulnerable and elderly householders.

Operation Liberal, working in partnership with a number of partner agencies and other forces has funded the production of a DVD that can be used to inform older people about the dangers of letting strangers into their homes, and also to train staff who work with them.

The DVD entitled "Not Sure? Don't Open the Door!" is composed of modules of different scenarios and each will be seen from the offenders' point of view as well as the victim's. Appropriate crime reduction messages and learning points are shown at the end of the film.

South Yorkshire Police are currently working with many partner agencies promoting the messages contained within this DVD, explaining how it can help to educate the public and those who work with or help older people about the dangers of bogus callers and rogue traders.

If you would like to lean more about this or feel that we could work with you promoting this initiative please contact Andy Foster, Deputy Force Crime Reduction Manager on 0114 2197076 or e-mail andy.foster@southyorks.pnn.police.uk )
