Temporary Chief Constable Bob Dyson

Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Bob DysonBob Dyson was born in Sheffield but emigrated to Melbourne, Australia, at the age of 10. His police career began as a police cadet in the Victoria State Police but was put on a temporary hold when he returned to South Yorkshire with his family. He subsequently joined South Yorkshire Police as a constable in November 1976.

During his career he has worked in a number of roles and locations across the county, including Roads Policing, Community Policing, Personnel, Operations Manager at Rotherham, Head of Community Safety and, as a Chief Superintendent, he was the District Commander for Barnsley.

Bob has also worked as a Staff Officer to Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary for a period of two years where he was responsible for inspecting police forces in the North East Region.

Bob has a Master's Degree in Human Resource Management and a Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Criminology and Police Management from Cambridge University.

Since joining the Force Senior Command Team in 2003 he has been the Assistant Chief Constable with responsibility for Personnel followed by being the Assistant Chief Constable with responsibility for Territorial Operations which included the development of Neighbourhood Policing. In 2007 Bob was appointed as Deputy Chief Constable, his portfolio included Professional Standards, Business Change and Legal Services.

He holds the ACPO Portfolio for Policing Sporting Events in Stadiums (other than football) and is a member of the ACPO Public Order Working Group.

He was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in the 2011 New Year Honours list.

 

Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Andy Holt

Assistant Chief Constable Andy HoltA former Chief Superintendent with Greater Manchester Police, he joined South Yorkshire Police in 2006.

Prior to joining the Police Service he served as an officer in HM Royal Marines and saw active service in both Northern Ireland and the Falklands. On leaving the Royal Marines in 1982 he set up a business in Stockport before joining Greater Manchester Police in 1986.

During his 20 years service in GMP he completed a BA (Hons) at Manchester Metropolitan University and went on to command a Subdivision in Moss Side, Manchester. In 2003 he was promoted to Chief Superintendent and subsequently commanded both the Bury and Trafford Divisions of GMP. Whilst working as the Commander of Manchester's Trafford division he was the police Commander at Manchester United's Old Trafford football ground for many premiership and England international fixtures.

On joining South Yorkshire Police he was the ACC responsible for Specialist Operations and became the ACPO lead on police pursuits.

Mr Holt has a wife and three children and his hobbies include skiing, sailing, reading and watching his children play sport.

 

Assistant Chief Constable Max Sahota

Max Sahota is an Assistant Chief Constable with South Yorkshire Police.  After completing his university studies in 1987, he joined Warwickshire Police and spent time in Uniform Operations, the Criminal Investigation Department and Proactive Crime Teams. 

He was promoted to superintendent with Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) in London where he led on the national reassurance agenda and tackling bureaucracy.  Max was also engaged in Force Inspections across England and Wales. 

Following a development programme with the Metropolitan Police Service, Max returned to force as an operational Superintendent.   In this role, he was responsible for implementation of the National Intelligence Model and operational command of firearms and public order functions.  He was later appointed the force Citizen Focus Programme Director to progress the Police Reform Agenda. 

He gained promotion to Chief Superintendent with West Midlands Police where he engaged in a wide range of policing challenges, maintaining his interest in firearms and public order command.  Max was responsible for policing many Championship and Premiership football grounds in West Midlands Police area.  He also led force operations to tackle organised crime groups / Gangs involved in the use of firearms and drugs markets, an approach that won a number of national awards. He was selected as Commander for Coventry and, in this role, introduced Neighbourhood Policing in partnership with the Local Authority, the Fire Service and the Primary Care Trust.  He convinced the partner agencies to join up services and deliver the wider Neighbourhood Management Agenda that provided a more cohesive Community Safety Strategy for the City.  

In 2008, he was promoted to Assistant Chief Constable in South Yorkshire Police, including responsibility for Specialist Crime, Counter Terrorism and Operations (Public Order, Firearms and Roads Policing).  He also leads on the centralised Force Communications Centre, which receives 1.6 million calls per year and in integral to delivering the Citizen Focus Programme through 5,500 staff across the force.    

More recently, Max was appointed Programme Director for crime collaboration in theYorkshireand Humber region, which accounts for 10% of UK policing.  His ambition is to improve the capability to tackle serious & organised crime and make 20% savings from the £112 million budget.  Max was also responsible for migration of the United Kingdom Human Trafficking Centre to the Serious and Organised Crime Agency.

Max Sahota is an Advanced Public Order and Firearms Gold Commander.  He holds a degree in Chemistry, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and a Diploma in Management.  He has also been recognised as a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.

Director of Finance and Administration Nigel Hiller

Nigel HillerNigel Hiller joined South Yorkshire Police in December 1995. He has portfolio responsibility for Corporate Finance, Facilities Management, Information Systems, Supply Chain Management and Vehicle Fleet Management.

Since joining South Yorkshire Police and in order to gain an understanding of policing issues, Nigel successfully completed the operational commanders programme at the police staff college, Bramshill, together with an advanced diploma in management from the University of Manchester.

Nigel is a member of the Association of Chief Police Officers of England and Wales.

Prior to joining South Yorkshire Police Nigel worked in local government at the District of Bolsover and in the National Health Service at Rotherham Health Authority, North and South Derbyshire Health Authority and Trent Regional Health Authority.

Nigel is a qualified accountant and a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and also a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants.

In terms of professional commitment outside the force, Nigel is presently a member of the Institute Council of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) and chair of its Financial Management Panel he is also past chair of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants Public Sector Committee.

He is a member of the ACPO Finance Committee and ACPO Procurement Sub-Committee.

Nigel is married to Susan and has two children. His outside interests include being proud to serve as a Governor at Netherthorpe School, Staveley, Derbyshire, which was founded in 1572 and which he attended for his secondary education. His other interests include walking by the coast, Formula 1 and anything to do with four wheels!

Ian Watson, Assistant Chief Officer (Human Resources)

ACO Ian WatsonA Cumbrian by birthright, Ian joined Humberside Police in February 2008. He was appointed to South Yorkshire Police in November 2010.  Ian was the first joint ACO (HR) appointed in the Police Service and, as such, he works for and supports both South Yorkshire Police and Humberside Police at senior command level.  He is responsible for leading the HR and Training functions of both forces.  Prior to this Ian had a background in the military, other police services, and has held HR directorships in both the private sector and NHS.

After joining the army and serving in the Infantry for 10 years, Ian attended University achieving an MBA, he also gained a MSc in Personnel Management & Industrial Relations at UMIST. 

He has held the senior positions of Human Resources Director in both food manufacturing and the NHS. Prior to this Ian had previous experience of the police service in both Essex Police and Lancashire Constabulary in various equality and HR roles.

A Fellow Chartered Member of the Institute of Personnel and Development, he is married to Sue and they have a young daughter Elizabeth. Ian's hobbies include jogging with his two black Labrador dogs, sailing the Drascombe longboat, gardening, reading and watching rugby union.
